Shortlisted for Suckcess
Suckling Transport has been shortlisted for two awards at the Motor Transport Dinner in London on 13th July. The Company is one of 5 finalists for the Safety Award, along with Palletline PLC, United Biscuits Logistics, Walkers Snack Foods Distribution and Wincanton.
And, in the Fleet Driver of the Year Award, Hythe-based driver David Elliott has been shortlisted along with Paul Fullwood of Wincanton and Steve Ward of TNT UK.
David Elliott will accompany our Management team to the awards dinner in two weeks time.
Euro 5's for Jet
The first Euro 5 vehicles were recently added to the Company’s ConocoPhillips Contract fleet at Coryton.
The DAF 85CF FT environmentally friendly tandem-axle trucks went into service at the end of March and are performing well.
Seven new MAN tri-axle vehicles joined our Grangemouth fleet in the last quarter. All these vehicles replaced 2005 tractor units going off lease.
Fleet Engineer Dan Bauckham will be reviewing the performance of the Company’s MAN and DAF trucks in preparation for the replacement of 18 trucks in the next 12 months.
World Fuel Services sign up
World Fuel Services Limited became the 50th Company to use the TankShare service since it was launched in 2000.
World Fuel Services use the TankShare service in Scotland, where Alex McPhee and his team enjoy business from Highland Fuels, Gleaner Oils, A. Gray & Son, Bernard Brogans, Allison Hunter and Associated Agricultural.
Well done McTankShare.
FTA provide new tacho service
Suckling Transport has signed a new contract with the Freight Transport Association to provide tachograph analysis services.
From 5th July 2010, and with all company owned vehicles now fitted with digital tachographs, the Company will switch from the FTA Visit system to the FTA Bureau Service. This will check 100% of charts for compliance and maintain a full record for Working Time Directive, or Road Transport Directive as it is correctly called.
The FTA will no longer visit operating centres as the analysis will take place using downloaded data, with managers having access to on-line reports.
Drivers need to download digital data from the card at least once each week, ensuring that they have recorded a complete record by either entering all non-driving activity by answering the questions posed when they put their card in at the start of each shift, or by making a manual entry on a print out and sending that print out to Pat Hollands.
Nikki Pacey’s team will be responsible for entering details of non-driving work such as training, sickness and holidays and Pat Hollands will enter other non-driving activities.
It has also been agreed that WTD periods will operate in 26 weeks cycles commending 5th July 2010, as these are considered easier to understand then the alternative 17-week cycles.
Team of the Quarter
Our ConocoPhillips contract drivers at Coryton are our team of the quarter with a magnificent performance on safe and fuel efficient driving.
Not only did every Coryton driver stay in the green band for the whole of the 3 months for ‘driver safety’ and ‘fuel consumption’ but achieved an average fuel efficiency performance of 8.33 miles per gallon.
Well done to the Coryton crew.
Who do you think should be the next Team of the Quarter? Email or fax your suggestions to Sue Nicholas.
Liphook perfect delivery

Managing Director Peter Larner, Regional Manager Andrew Eckton and Shell Manager Peter Robinson attended a Perfect Delivery Demonstration given by David Elliott at Liphook recently.
Further Perfect Delivery demonstrations are planned later this year, in both Scotland and the South West & Wales.
Welcome to the Race Day
Today sees the seventh running of the Suckling Transport Handicap Chase. The race has had some great winners in the past – none surpassed by Sue Smith’s grey Ross Comm.

We are hoping for a great field today. Having lost race days in the past from too much rain and, last year, too little rain, we are hoping for just the right amount.
Most of our customers are represented here today, along with our Driver of the Year, Mike James and his wife Sandra.

There will be the usual charity auction, with a super prize of six ‘Exhibition’ French wines from The Wine Society.
The chosen charity will be selected at the race day and will be one of the charities supported by our workforce competing in the 1mKm Challenge.
Welcome to all our guests.
3 peak challenge
On September 23rd 2010, Suckling Transport Operations Manager, Shaun Rees-Brown, will attempt the Three Peaks Challenge.
This involves climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in the Lake District and finishing with Snowdon in Wales.
Training and healthy eating started back in April 2010. And having lost a stone in weight Shaun should be well prepared for the challenge.
Shaun will be raising funds for a charity called Little Havens Children’s Hospice, which provides respite breaks, symptom control and end-of-life care for youngsters living with serious conditions. If you wish to sponsor Shaun please visit his JustGiving web page www.justgiving.com/3PC-ShaunRees-Brown. Or visit the Little Havens home page at www.littlehavens.org.uk
Little Havens provided support and help to Shaun’s Sister Sarah Allison and her husband Luke back in 2006, and our photo shows Shaun with his sister at a Charity Ball late last year in aid of Little Havens.

The 5-question Interview
Gareth Cox, Dispatch Supervisor took the 5-question interview this time round.
What did you do before joining Suckling’s?
I was a dispatcher for BP at Coryton.
What was the worst job you ever had?
When I was a teenager I was working for a groundwork’s contractor refurbishing a sewage plant. The smell was awful especially after a night out!
What was the last CD you brought?
I bought two, Plastic Beach by Gorillaz and The Defamation of Stickland Banks by Plan B.
What was your most memorable day?
Apart from the birth of my son Blake, it would have to be watching England beat Scotland at Wembley during Euro ’96, the atmosphere was fantastic and Gazza’s goal was superb.
Where was the best holiday you ever had?
I went to Ibiza in 1998 with 6 mates for the last week of the season, it was brilliant but really expensive, we all went clubbing every night until dawn and finished the week at Manumission’s closing party.
Can you suggest an employee who should face the 5 question interview?

Razing concern
In a special Safety Sprint for drivers on our ConocoPhillips contract, Coryton-based Dave Razey won himself dinner for two for raising the best near miss or potential incident report.
Dave submitted a potential incident report or Safety Observations as they are now called, following a marine delivery to Harwich earlier this year. The incident will now be used as a desk-stop exercise to test the company’s emergency procedures.
Well done Dave.
